It’s a love-hate relationship when it comes to working from home. There are days when I feel extremely productive and grind for hours and days when I work one and am ready to pull my hair out.
But after working at home for more than a year now, I now know how to better myself for a productive and happy day vs. a crappy one.
Yes, not every day is the same, nor is my mood- I’m only human. But when I follow the five tips I created for myself, I find I am much happier, with my days ending in a smile.
Here’s how you, too, can end your day with a smile.
“But first, coffee.”
Remember the days of going into the office, setting your things down, and immediately running to the coffee room to pour yourself a hot cup of joe? Me either. They seem far away.
However, to tackle my inbox, make happy small talk with my significant other, or feel like it is indeed a workday, I need to make coffee.
That first step not only puts a smile on my face as I inhale the fragrant smell of coffee beans, but it makes working at home that much more normal and far more enjoyable.
You can skip your shower, but don’t skip coffee.
Dress To Impress:
I know that sounds cliche as many of our offices are the couch or a few steps away from our bedrooms, but as Barney would say from How I Met Your Mother, “Suit Up.”
Put on that favorite lipstick of yours or some quality beard oil and throw on a dress, skirt, or nicer pants; even jeans!
But ditch the sweatpants. Those have to go. Yes, they are our comfort, and they feel way better, but believe me, when I dress cute and put some makeup on my face, I am a mood! I feel good, look good, and my smile remains on my face.
Studies show that when you “dress to impress,” you feel better, you’re more confident, and you are much happier.
There are several distractions at home vying for our attention: laundry, dishes in the sink, our significant others checking on us when they are bored.
But the one distraction we should all allow in our day-to-day routine is a walk; get that fresh air we deserve.
The days I don’t get out or allow myself a walk, I’m a crabby patty. Sunshine on the face equals happiness; it’s as simple as that.
Cooking isn’t for everyone. I know this. However, cooking is a comfort to me- especially at dinner time with a glass of wine. But being that we can’t have a glass at work, lunch is the next best thing.
Don’t go crazy and go all Chef Gordon Ramsay, but make something nice. Make something that puts a smile on your face. Something quick but satiating. No Cup O Noodles, but a colorful wrap or hearty soup.
Soup, I will say, is one of the easiest things you can make while working from home. Throw in your ingredients, stir, head back to work, and in three hours, lunch is ready! A full and happy belly makes for a great rest of your workday.
This tip I offer is one I sometimes tend to ignore. Don’t. With that fresh cup of coffee of yours, allow yourself this one last tip: to learn something.
I’m not talking about playing the piano, although that is something I am reintroducing to myself, but read an article or a newsletter that’s beneficial to you and what YOU like.
Forget the news. It’s depressing. Allow yourself fifteen minutes in the morning to learn something new before you dive into work.
Read a short article on how to meditate, write more, or even a quick recipe you’ve been dying to try- anything.
It is essential to help keep our minds sharp, but more importantly, it helps us grow and continues to put that smile on our face.
